Eleven Things I Learned In December {2017}

December 29, 2017 by Jennifer

I’m Not a Fan of Frozen Meals

I’ve never been one to prepare a bunch of freezer meals to make dinner time easier. Why? Because they never taste good to me once I cook them. Recently we bought some frozen meals from a place in my hometown. It’s a great place, with great food, but I could only eat the meatloaf. The two casseroles were disgusting! The texture about did me in. I was reminded once again why I don’t do freezer meals. YUCK!!!!

It’s Okay If We Have to Leave the Party

We attempted to go to a birthday party for Jackson’s best little buddy earlier this month, but Jackson’s anxiety got the best of him. He asked to leave, so we did. I remember a time when that would have crushed me. I would have been so upset that we couldn’t stay and participate in such a normal childhood activity. But I also remember a time when he couldn’t voice his needs and it felt really good hearing him tell us exactly what he needed in that moment. Later that day we met the same friend for pizza and the Christmas parade. We ended up having the BEST time.

Spending a Day at Kindergarten Helped Me Understand What Jackson Needed Most

We’re Getting in the Groove of our Half-Time Homeschooling

Jackson is really rocking his sight words and I’m getting in the groove of teaching him in fun and creative ways. He’s a smart kid and I love watching him learn new things! Here’s a few photos from some of the activities we did this month. We also hung a huge white board in our breakfast area and he loves writing his sight words on it!

Jackson LOVED Christmas

Six is such a magical age for Christmas! Although Christmas was a little different this year with our travels, Jackson still soaked it all in! He had a blast going to cut down a real Christmas tree. He asked Santa for a green remote control truck from Bass Pro. He did his best to sing Jingle Bells. He knows Christmas is Baby Jesus’ birthday. He loved looking at Christmas lights and would sing the line from Christmas Vacation every single time we drove by a display that was super bright. He’d belt out Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! It’s a memory I never want to forget!

I Have a Six Year Old

I had so many mixed emotions about Jackson turning six! I found myself tearing up as I looked back at his baby photos. We had a low-key birthday party for him at my mom and dad’s house before we headed to Florida. He requested a monster truck party so that’s what he got!

Disney is Doable When You Have a Child with Special Needs

I’m working on a blog post about our trip to Disney World. Just know this, going to Disney World is TOTALLY possible if you have a child with special needs. It won’t be easy, but it can be done! We made some amazing memories and I can’t wait to share the details with you!

But Never Pass Up a Tram Ride

John made the mistake of walking to the entrance of Hollywood Studios.  Jackson had a meltdown because we didn’t ride the tram. We turned around, boarded the tram and rode it around the parking lot. You pick your battles people!

It’s Always Good to Get Back Home

After 12 days away from home, 44 hours in the car, 33 miles walked at Disney World, three hotels and four nights in Texas, we were three worn out peeps! It felt SO good to be home. We dumped all the bags in the entry hall, turned on the fireplace and vegged out! I am so glad to be home – back to routine and comfort and quiet. Our home is a peaceful one and I’m so thankful for that!

A Disney Detox Is a Thing

We got home from having Christmas at my parents and went into full blown Disney detox mode! We’ve been worthless the past few days. Jackson’s had way too much screen time, a fire has been going 24/7 and John and I have been binge watching the second season of The Crown. Maybe I’ll get around to taking Christmas decor down this weekend???
